Our destination today is Herculaneum, the first buried Vesuvian city to be discovered (1709), preserved under pyroclastic material from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79AD. A fascinating tour of this seaside retreat for the Roman elite with its grand and luxurious houses, baths and carbonized wood objects such as roofs, beds and doors. An easy lunch before our conquest of Mt. Vesuvius! Breathtaking views over the Gulf of Naples from the summit of the volcano will make this a day to remember.
